Get Involved
We asked teachers and students throughout Connecticut to participate in the production of both the television show on Frederick Douglass and this website. More than 2,000 visitors came to our site and added their suggestions and comments. Our educator “production team” gave creative input on the script, the characters, the curriculum and Web designs. We got many responses to our questions: Got a 19th-century hoe we could borrow? Did your great-great grandmother leave you her favorite dress? Do you happen to own two oxen that wouldn't be camera shy? Do you have suggestions for locations or costumes that are historically accurate for the mid-1800s in Maryland?
One teacher even submitted a Frederick Douglass curriculum that he had designed, and one social studies class made it a project to read an early draft of our shooting script and sent us suggestions for making it sound more realistic. (We heeded their advice and made the changes!)
We talked to teachers at the New England Regional Conference on the Social Studies. Here’s what teachers at NERC said.
