Lights, Camera, Action! GET INVOLVED!

Principal Photography Completed; Pilots In Progress

We completed filming for the half-hour TV drama on Frederick Douglass on May 17. In a whirlwind 10 days we shot on location aboard the Mystic Whaler, at Mystic Seaport, at the Essex Steam Train, the Denison Homestead in Mystic, at Warrup’s Farm in Redding, at Roton Middle School in Norwalk, on the streets of South Norwalk (transformed into New York City circa 1830) and in the Palace Digital Studios.

Young American Heroes director Chris Campbell gives direction to Jamie Hector (center) who plays Frederick Douglass, and Jeff Greene, who plays a sailor who helps Douglass escape to freedom. Shot on location at the Essex Steam Train in Essex, Conn., in May.

Led by Jamie Hector (star of HBO's "The Wire" and NBC's "Heroes") as our older Frederick Douglass, our cast put in stellar performances under sometimes less than balmy weather conditions! See a slide show of behind-the-scenes photos - Click Here.

A special thank you to all of the students who answered our casting call through our website and traveled from near and far to participate as extras. You were great!

The "road test" of our Young American Heroes classroom curriculum and 2.0 website is taking place this month:

  • Scofield Magnet Middle School, Stamford - Fri. May 30-Thur. June 5
  • West Side Middle School, Waterbury - Mon. June 2 - Fri., June 6
  • Tomlinson Middle School, Fairfield - Mon. June 8 - Fri. June 13

The pilot curriculum is a five-day lesson unit on Frederick Douglass designed around key choice points in his young life and uses critical scenes from the TV show as well as a digital storytelling activity that requires students to review primary documents online.

We'll be editing the final Frederick Douglass film over the summer for its premiere broadcast on Connecticut Public Television, date and time to be announced.

Have a great summer (and keep checking www.YoungAmericanHeroes.com)
